Hilton, who once served as a policy chief under David Cameron, is now positioning himself as a leading candidate for the governorship of California. His campaign is rooted in promises of tax reductions and significant reforms aimed at dismantling what he perceives as an overly bloated governmental structure.
In recent statements, Hilton emphasized that the tough lessons learned from the challenges faced by Britain are motivating his bold outsider campaign. He aims to address the inefficiencies in California's state government, which he claims have resulted in a costly bureaucracy.
Recent polls indicate that Hilton, a Fox News host and former adviser, is not only leading the Republican primary but is also gaining ground against Democratic contenders in a state traditionally dominated by liberal ideologies. Notably, no Republican has managed to secure victory in this Democratic stronghold since Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former Hollywood actor, held office back in 2003. Yet, Hilton's unexpected rise in support is fueled by a passionate base of grassroots advocates and small-dollar contributors.
He has committed to reducing illegal immigration and eliminating environmental taxes that contribute to California's status as having the highest cost of living in the United States. In a vision he terms "Cali-fordable," Hilton proposes exempting Californians earning up to $100,000 from state income taxes and lowering healthcare expenses by canceling free insurance coverage for illegal migrants.
Echoing sentiments often associated with Donald Trump, Hilton remarked to The Sun, "It’s time to make California golden again.” Despite having renounced his British citizenship to become an American citizen, he observes that many issues troubling the UK are similarly affecting California, a state once viewed as a powerhouse.
He pointed out alarming statistics, such as the fact that electric bills in California are more than double the national average. Hilton is determined to scrutinize state government operations for waste, fraud, and corruption. He expressed his concern over California's budget, which has nearly doubled in the last five years, questioning whether this increase has led to improved services or if conditions have actually worsened.
Hilton departed from his role in Downing Street in 2012 after becoming frustrated with the slow pace of reform and the overwhelming bureaucratic hurdles within the UK government. In a dramatic exit, he suggested cutting £25 billion from the benefits system and reducing the civil service workforce by 90%. He reflected on his experiences in the UK, stating, "I recognize the manipulations of bureaucracy from firsthand experience. I learned just how challenging it is to effect change and how aggressive one must be in the face of such obstacles."
Vowing to eliminate free healthcare for undocumented migrants in order to alleviate the financial burden on working citizens, Hilton criticized current Governor Gavin Newsom. He condemned Newsom's pride in spending taxpayer money to provide for those without legal residency, stating, "It’s disgusting. He’s taking money from hardworking Californians who struggle to afford their own healthcare, many of whom work multiple jobs. He’s using their funds to subsidize services for individuals who shouldn’t even be here."
Newsom is currently seen as a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2028, but Hilton dismissed him as "a complete joke," pointing to Newsom’s activities at global forums while failing to effectively manage California’s domestic issues.
Having supported both Brexit and Trump's initiatives, Hilton expressed openness to receiving backing from the White House for his campaign, saying, "I have a good relationship with the President. We know we’re friends. We communicate occasionally. While I haven't formally asked for support, I would be honored to receive it."
