A CEO's controversial humor sparks employee backlash.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff's recent jokes about ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) have left some employees feeling angry and disappointed. But here's where it gets controversial: these jokes were made during an exclusive company event, the "Company Kickoff," which was also live-streamed internally.
According to internal messages obtained by Business Insider, Benioff made "multiple" jokes about ICE agents, including one about their surveillance of employee travel. This sparked a wave of reactions on Slack, with employees expressing their dismay.
"It's hard to believe Salesforce still upholds its values when such off-base jokes about ICE are made in the opening keynote," one employee wrote. "This is unacceptable.
Another employee shared their discomfort, stating, "I'm deeply disappointed that jokes about ICE were made so early on in Marc's keynote, especially after welcoming teammates from outside the US. It's insensitive and tasteless, making it hard to focus on the positive aspects of the company.
This incident comes on the heels of Salesforce's recent layoffs and executive reshuffles. Benioff has faced backlash before for his comments at company meetings. In 2023, when Salesforce announced plans to cut 10% of its workforce, Benioff's two-hour talk was described as 'tone-deaf' by some employees, with jokes about the layoffs and the pandemic.
And this is the part most people miss: Benioff has a history of making controversial statements. He previously suggested deploying the National Guard to San Francisco, which led to an apology later on.
So, is this a case of a CEO's humor gone too far, or are employees being overly sensitive? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
