Residents of Blackheath, in south London, are up in arms against Lewisham Council's recent installation of speed bumps. These 'sleeping policemen' are causing quite a stir, with locals claiming they are damaging the undercarriages of high-end family cars. An independent engineering survey, commissioned by concerned motorists, revealed that the majority of the speed bumps exceeded the council's height regulations. These bumps are scraping the underbellies of pricier cars, including Mercedes, Audi, Tesla, and other luxury brands. But why are these speed bumps causing such a ruckus?
The survey found that several bumps measured over 100mm, while the council's standard is 80mm. However, the council refutes these claims, insisting that all speed bumps adhere to national guidelines. The council implemented these measures to enforce 20mph speed limits, particularly near a school and a hospital.
One resident, Andrew Thorp, noticed the issue firsthand with his Mercedes C-Class. He said, 'It's unfair that we're paying for these bumps through our taxes and then paying again to repair our cars.'
But the council isn't backing down. They assert that the bumps are within permitted heights and can be navigated safely at 15-20mph. They also acknowledged that a few bumps needed adjustments, which have since been rectified.
The debate intensifies with cyclists joining the fray. They argue that cars swerving to avoid the bumps pose a danger to riders. Yet, the council maintains that the bumps are necessary for road safety.
