A63 Castle Street Project: Final Phase Updates and Closures (2026)

Major disruptions are ongoing as the A63 faces an increasing number of closures during what experts now call the 'most complex final stage' of the Castle Street redevelopment project. If you're a commuter or local resident, you might be wondering what these changes mean for your daily travels—and here's where it gets controversial... because the completion date has faced unexpected setbacks, and some could argue that the scope of disruption is far from over.

National Highways recently announced that over the coming weeks, drivers should expect to see modifications in the road layout, indicating that the project is shifting into its critical final phase. This phase involves nearly nightly closures of the A63 in both directions from 8 pm to 6 am—covering weekends as well—particularly between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way. These closures are planned to continue until March 1. Remarkably, the only exception so far is this upcoming weekend, when closures will be temporarily paused on Saturday, January 17, and Sunday, January 18, due to a slight adjustment in the work schedule.

A spokesperson from National Highways explained that once the new underpass becomes operational for traffic, these overnight closures will be crucial for finishing essential connections—linking slip roads and connecting key roads such as Commercial Road to Ferensway. They emphasized that this stage involves complex work, and motorists might notice subtle changes in road configurations in the upcoming weeks. To stay safe and avoid confusion, drivers are encouraged to follow pertinent signage, remain in their designated lanes, and exercise caution within the temporary traffic management zones.

While specific reopening dates for the underpass have yet to be announced, Natioal Highways has committed to revealing precise timings once they are confirmed. The restrictions on night closures will stay in place through February, as previously announced. In their November update, officials detailed the progress made, including installing ninety-six pre-cast brick wall panels, working on the bridge deck, and constructing new central barriers—highlighting the scale and complexity of this ambitious project.

The ambitious plan to lower the A63 at the Ferensway and Commercial Road junction to create a split-level interchange, along with widening the eastbound carriageway between Princes Dock Street and Market Place, began in early 2020. Originally, the entire scheme was scheduled for completion in spring 2025. However, unforeseen and challenging ground conditions that couldn't have been anticipated beforehand caused a delay of approximately one year, shifting the expected completion date to spring of this year.

In addition to the Castle Street project, another part of the A63 will undergo maintenance work. Starting next Monday, January 19, and continuing until January 23, the westbound lane between Southcoates roundabout and the junction with the A1165 Great Union Street will close nightly for resurfacing. Drivers are advised to follow the same diversion routes used during the Castle Street closures, ensuring a consistent and predictable detour for those affected.
