Yellowfin Tuna FishThis is the tuna most people look to catch when we fish offshore and go NJ Tuna fishing. Hooking up with a Yellowfin is a thrill and an experience worth trying. They are extremely powerful and demand the best in tackle and gaffs!

A beautiful and colorful tuna. Yellowfin have football shaped bodies, dark blue or black above with yellow on the sides and fins tinged in yellow with the finlets yellow. Blue to steel black above, silver to silvery gold on the flanks, silvery white below. In fresh fish a band of bright gold or iridescent blue (sometimes both) runs along the upper flank, separating the dark back from the lighter belly area. These Tuna are found offshore, from the Hudson Canyon on south, in clean warm currents. They prefer clean water with water temperatures of 63 to 81 degrees Farenheit.

They feed both on the surface, and well down in the water column. reach a maximum size of 450 pounds. The yellow fin we catch weigh any where from 35 to over 100 pounds. Most of the ones we catch weigh from 50 to 80 pounds. Yellowfin is a very good eating fish. It is extremely good as sashimi (raw fish).

We will either catch tuna with bait or a jig when NJ Tuna fishing. Dropping diamond jigs down deep and jigging them up and down with long sweeps of the rod is another method when the fish are deep and only surface briefly before retreating to the cooler deeper waters. Probably the most exciting way to catch tuna is casting surface popper baits. Tuna feed almost exclusively on smaller fish and squid.

Description:All tuna belong to the Sombridae family of mackerels. Yellowfin tuna are the second most important commercial variety of tuna. They usually congregate in schools and swim with or near porpoises. Like all tuna the yellowfin is a fast swimmer that can migrate thousands of miles in several weeks. Harvested tuna usually grow to between 9 and 45 kg (20 to 100 lbs), but can grow to 180 kg (400 lbs). Yellow fin tuna are considered to be a more tropical species.
